How To Reserve or “Hold” Library Books and Videos

by Jennifer Salerno, Francis Martin Regional Library

Does it seem that DVD or book you want is ALWAYS checked out? Don't despair! You can place that item on hold to make sure you get it. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Find item in the LEO Catalog. If your library's copy is checked out or if another branch of NYPL owns it, you can place a hold on it. (see librarian if no branches of NYPL own the item)

  2. Once the item is found in the catalog, type in PH (for Place Hold) and press <return>. A screen will appear with the following prompt: “Type your library barcode.”

  3. Enter the number on the back of your library card. This number should begin with “23333…”DO NOT put any spaces between the numbers. You can enter all 14 digits or the last 9. (after the 233333).

  4. Enter your four digit PIN number or the last 4 digits of your phone number and press <return>.

  5. A prompt at the bottom of the screen will ask if your contact info is correct. Enter Y for yes or N for no and press <return>. LEO Catalog will then ask you to choose which branch library you want to pick up your item. Enter the # corresponding to your choice and press <return>.

It's as simple as that! You may have up to 15 items on hold. To check the status of your holds, choose the “Review Patron Record” function of the LEO Catalog.
